Karen van Caulil, PhD
President and Chief Executive Officer
Karen van Caulil, PhD, joined the Florida Alliance for Healthcare Value in 2011 as President and CEO. She leads this nationally recognized business coalition on health, overseeing all activities and operations including research projects, educational programs, conferences, and member engagement. Dr. van Caulil previously served in leadership positions for the University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Medicine and the Health Council of East Central Florida.
A respected leader in her field, Dr. van Caulil represents the Florida Alliance’s mission and work locally, regionally, and nationally, actively serving on numerous boards, advisory committees, and workgroups for organizations such as the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, Catalyst for Payment Reform, Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration, the Florida Department of Health, and many others.
Dr. van Caulil graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and completion of the “Science, Technology and Human Values” degree program. She received a Master of Science in Public Health in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an interdisciplinary Doctorate in Public Affairs from the University of Central Florida. Dr. van Caulil was named “Outstanding Alumni” from the University of Central Florida’s College of Health and Public Affairs in 2012 and under her leadership, the Florida Alliance received the Member Leadership Award from the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions in 2018.
Jack Mahoney, MD, MPH
An experienced healthcare strategist and employee health expert, Jack Mahoney, MD, MPH, joined the Florida Alliance for Healthcare Value in 2008, and provides our staff and members with guidance and leadership on value-based benefit design and clinical matters. Prior to joining us, he served Pitney Bowes as Strategic Healthcare Initiatives Director where he was responsible for health-related programs, including active and retiree medical benefits, on-site medical clinics, disability management, and wellness programs. His team developed innovative healthcare initiatives, including the launch of the first value-based benefit programs. Dr. Mahoney’s career experience also includes serving as a partner at Hewitt Associates, a human resources consulting firm, and as medical director for GTE Corporation.
Dr. Mahoney earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed residency training in aerospace medicine at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas as well as a psychiatric residency at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and completed his undergraduate education at Boston College.
Ashley Tait-Dinger, MBA
Director of Analytics, Alternative Payment Models (APM) & Finance
With a strong background in finance, IT, and data analytics, Ashley Tait-Dinger, MBA, joined the Florida Alliance for Healthcare Value in 2012. She leads our patient safety and quality activities with The Leapfrog Group and also oversees our high priorities of data transparency and payment reform. In addition, she provides support to our Board of Directors by managing the organization’s accounting, audit, and finance activities. Ashley previously led the start-up and operation of the Regional Extension Center at the University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Medicine.
Ashley earned her Master’s in Business Administration from the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College and also completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at UCF.
David Cavalleri, PhD, LMHC
Director of Research and Evaluation
With an extensive background in nonprofit community health and research, including study design and program evaluation, David Cavalleri, PhD, LMHC, began working with the Florida Alliance for Healthcare Value in 2014. He leads our quality improvement and management work, developing quality improvement measures, reviewing clinical indicator data, and crafting performance improvement strategies for providers.
David previously served as a consultant and director of research for the Health Council of East Central Florida, Inc., and also conducted extensive research and program development and evaluation efforts for Ryan White HIV/AIDS initiatives in the Orlando and Tampa areas. He earned his PhD in Marriage and Family Counseling and his Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology both from the University of Florida. David is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of Florida (MH16023). He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida.
Lisa Hain, MBA
Lisa Hain, MBA, became our Administrative Coordinator in 2014, and is in charge of scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, and organizing our educational events. She also provides support to our research projects and communicates regularly with members regarding our initiatives and programs. Lisa earned her Master’s in Business Administration from Boston University and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Management at Syracuse University.
Lauren L. Josephs, PhD, LMHC, NCC
An experienced leader in mental health, research, evaluation, training, strategic planning, quality assurance, diversity, and inclusion, Lauren L. Josephs, PhD, LMHC, NCC, began working with the Florida Alliance for Healthcare Value in 2020. She leads our efforts to train healthcare providers on quality management, including application of measurement and data in quality improvement efforts, collection of performance data, and use of cultural competence as a quality indicator.
Lauren also serves as Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Research Evaluation & Training at Visionary Vanguard Group Inc., in Orlando, and served as a Health Disparities Researcher for Florida Hospital (now AdventHealth Orlando). In 2016, the Florida Department of Health, Orange County, awarded her a “Public Health Hero Award.” Lauren earned her PhD in Public Affairs at the University of Central Florida, where she was also presented an “Outstanding Alumni Award” in 2017. In addition, she holds Specialist and Master of Education degrees from the University of Florida, where she also earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
Sarah Slone, AICP
With over 20 years of experience in strategic planning and community benefit programming, Sarah Slone, AICP, began consulting with the Florida Alliance for Healthcare Value in 2021. She is focused on the expansion of our successful Cancer Navigation Program to include complex chronic conditions and rare diseases. The program is now called the Employee Benefits Advocate Program to reflect its expanded scope. She is also working on our mental health and substance abuse projects, including The Path Forward initiative.
Throughout her career and consulting work in the non-profit, government, foundation, and for-profit sectors, Sarah has specialized in utilizing best practice research, data analytics, and cross-sector community partnerships to create, develop, implement, and evaluate programs. She also volunteers as a community evaluator for the Victory Cup initiative and in 2016 earned a Public Health Hero Award from the Florida Department of Health-Orange County for her commitment to building a healthier community. Sarah earned a Master of Arts degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Science degree in Food and Nutrition from Florida State University.
